Hanging Items on Lath and Plaster Walls: A Guide

A 1/4 inch masonry bit for molly bolts and plastic anchors may be worth investing in, especially if you have a number of holes to drill. These bits are relatively inexpensive and can make quick work of drilling through plaster. However, they can be difficult to find in sizes below about 1/8 inch.

It's recommended to use anchors for anything over 10 lbs., as they provide added security and stability. There are special types of anchors available that have coated nails with knurled heads designed to avoid cracking the plaster.

When it comes to locating studs, it can be challenging, but tapping hangers into place has been successful for lighter items. Plaster is surprisingly strong, with utility room shelves holding 500 pounds of weight suspended from lag bolts.

For heavier or larger items like pot racks and shelving units, smaller plaster anchors may be necessary. In one instance, a large elfa shelving unit was successfully hung using plaster anchors and 2-inch screws, as well as lag bolts that went into the space behind the lathe.
